Your Questions About 4 man Tent

Betty asks…

4 Season Camping Tents?

Lately I've been getting into the whole wilderness survival thing, and I've done a bit of a background research in it. I've come to find out it's best to get 4 season tents because 1. You're not limited to any type of season and 2. They're vastly more durable than regular tents but I've still got a few questions I'd like cleared up. Are the best tents really dome shaped? I've heard the dome or "cross bar top" shaped tents provide the best structure in high wind situations, I'd like the opinion of someone with experience. Is it really the Tent design or the way the person sets it up? Also I've heard that low profile tents are better suited for high winds just how low exactly? I'm more than willing to sacrifce head room for preformance (come on it's a camping tent, you're suppose to sleep in the thing not throw a dance party) Are they're any good 4 season tents that ARE NOT school bus yellow? I know some may argue this is a safety thing so you can find your way back to camp, but if the weather is really bad common sense says not to got wandering around. Plus my mother and father have gone hunting together, they say you can't see the orange "safety" outfits even at 10 feet. This is just a personal choice thing. And finally, are there any dependable, highly rated 4 season tents for 1 person? I'd like to travel as light as possible, I'll settle for a 2 person tent if I have to but 1 person tents would be ideal. As far as price goes it really doesn't matter to me, I've come to find out as far as camping equipment goes you truly get what you pay for. And any additional information camping wise is welcomed by the way. By the way I should point out that I'm mostly interested in preformance of the tent and it's color, I'll deal with a little extra weight in the pack if I have to but still it's nice to look around for what you want.

I would recommend a good three season tent check under Sierra designs they make some great tents. I have had one now for a three years and camped in below zero weather in it and had some nasty rainfalls and have never had a problem. North face makes some great products as well. I am not sure where you live but in Canada we have a store called MEC they make their own brand of tents and are very good as well if you google MEC it will come up and you can look at their catalog. But if I was you check out Sierra Designs I would say they are the best tent on the market. I have the Electron a great two man dome tent with two vestibules.

Where are the best places to tent camp in Massachusetts?

I'm looking for a nice place to go tent camping with my boyfriend. We don't need a family camp grounds…just something fun for a couple in their mid-twenties. I'd love to find a place near the Cape or Martha's Vineyard but anywhere nice in Mass would do… We're looking for a place where we can swim, ride bikes, rent jet ski's or paddle boats, etc. Thanks!

twopersontents.com answers:

I you are adventuresome, you can try Nickerson State Park in Brewster. The adventure part is that as far as I know, they still operate on a first-come, first-served basis (you can't reserve a spot in advance), and people have been known to have to camp in the parking lot for a couple of days before a site became available. Alternatively, Sweetwater Forrest (also in Brewster) is a family-oriented campground where you can reserve sites in advance. Both places offer camping, with nearby freshwater ponds. You can swim or ride bikes (there are trails inside Nickerson Park, and the Cape Cod Rail Trail runs by both places). I don't think that power boats of any kind are allowed on the ponds. Its not far from either to one of the many beaches on the Cape – Brewster is on the bay side (the 'quiet' beaches), but its not far to the major ocean beaches.

What is the best family tent?

We have a 4 month old, but only a 2 person tent. We are looking to start camping again starting next month. We want one we can hopefully stand in (hubby is 6'2"), maybe has different rooms, but not a necessity. A screen porch type thing would be nice, but again not necessity. We do want enough room to have a place to get out of the rain when it does. It can get cold and decently windy where we go. And we'd love something that is easy to set up. We have 2 70 pound dogs that would also be there with us. We have a van so it dosen't have to break down too small, although that would be nice. And something with a carrying case that actually can fit back in once taken out. We want an independent one, not one that attaches to a vehicle, Any suggestions?

Your Questions About Tents

William asks…

What is the name of those really big tents with several rooms?

The ones that have a kitchen, several bedrooms. Need to buy one for a summer holiday with friends. Could you please give me the name of these tents, or some suggestions for good ones? Thank you in advance :)

twopersontents.com answers:

A large tent that is carpeted inside. You can partition it to your needs and likings. You can even install a portable toilet. However, it is not recommended to have a kitchen inside as it is highly flammable.

Thomas asks…

What kind of metal is used for ez flex tents, or sunshades?

Have you seen those floding sun shades, or kids tents that you can fold into little packages? They have a thin metal strip inside. I need to find out what type of material that is and if you know where to get it.

twopersontents.com answers:

I'm not sure they use metal strips, but if they do they will be spring steel.. Spring steel is everywhere. I think they are more likely to use composite materials such as graphite, kevlar or glass fibre. Again these are really readily available. All these materials are not really off the shelf items and are made for specific uses. You will find composite manufacturers in your yellow pages or on the internet. Hopefully they would have some local to you.

Sandy asks…

Are there any dealers of canvas bell tents in the United States?

These tents are round, usually 13 feet in diameter, and have a center pole that goes to about 8.5 feet. They look perfect for what I do, but the only companies I found that market them are overseas.

Your Questions About Pop Up Tent

Michael asks…

What material is used to make a pop up tent 'pop'?

Hi, I was wondering what material is used to make a pop up tent pop? I have only found information which says the tent pops because of flexible wire but does this have another name? I was wondering if this material or similar is available to buy. I wanted to experiment with making a mini toy tent.

twopersontents.com answers:

They make inexpensive "pop up" mesh laundry baskets and hampers (check the housewares department of K-Mart or Target or even large chain drugstores.) They have a similar sort of springy wire in a sleeve that creates tension to form the shape (though tents usually use plastic coated spring wire or fiberglass rods). You could get one of those for a few dollars and use the matirials to make your mini tent.

Jenny asks…

Can I use a portable Air conditioning unit in a pop up tent trailer?

Im going camping this summer and its going to be HOT. I have a 6 month old that I will need to keep cool. We have electrical hookup at the site. Is it safe to use a portable air conditioning unit in a pop up tent trailer?

twopersontents.com answers:

Yes but there two issues you will need to address. One is you will need to find a place to securely fasten the air conditioner so that it vents to the outside and cannot fall on anyone. The second point is the campsite electrical power. Be sure the air conditioner does not draw more amps than your campsite hookup. That hookup could be 15, 20, 30 or 50 amps. The 15 and 20 amps will have a standard household plug, but the 30 and 50 amp hookups have special plugs. So you also need to be sure the plug on your air conditioner is compatible with your hookup – if not, you can probably buy an adapter. The campground owner should be able to supply you with the electric hookup information.
